Choosing where to stay in Malta can have a bigger impact on your trip than you might expect. Although the island is relatively small, each area has its own character and atmosphere. Some places are ideal for exploring historic streets and cultural landmarks, while others are better suited for beach days, nightlife or a slower, more relaxed pace.
During our time in Malta, one thing became clear very quickly. Your hotel is more than just a place to sleep. It shapes how you start your mornings, how easily you can explore the island and what your evenings feel like.
In this guide, we are sharing the areas that stood out to us the most and what each one is best suited for.
Valletta For History, Atmosphere and Character ✨
Valletta is Malta’s capital and one of the most unique places to stay on the island. Despite its compact size, the city feels rich in detail and atmosphere. Elegant balconies, narrow streets and impressive sea views give it a timeless feel.
What we loved most about staying here was the overall experience. Early mornings were quiet and peaceful, and simply walking through the streets felt like part of the trip itself. There is a strong sense of history, but the city never feels overly formal or inaccessible.
Valletta is best suited for travelers who enjoy architecture, culture and a more refined atmosphere. It is also an excellent choice for couples looking for a romantic setting with plenty of great restaurants.
Sliema For Convenience and a Central Location 🌊
Sliema is one of the most practical places to stay in Malta. It offers a long seafront promenade, a large selection of hotels and restaurants, and excellent ferry and bus connections to other parts of the island.
We found Sliema to be a great all-round base. It has everything you need close by, from cafés and shops to waterfront dining, while still feeling relaxed and comfortable.
It may not have the same historic charm as Valletta, but it makes up for that with convenience and accessibility. If it is your first time visiting Malta and you want a central and easy place to stay, Sliema is a very strong option.
St Julian's For Nightlife and a Lively Atmosphere 🌙
St Julian's offers a more energetic and social side of Malta. During the day, the waterfront is lined with restaurants and bars, and in the evening the area becomes one of the liveliest spots on the island.
What stood out to us is how easy it is to combine a relaxed dinner by the sea with a vibrant night out. Nearby Paceville is the center of Malta’s nightlife, making this area particularly appealing to younger travelers and groups of friends.
Even if nightlife is not your main priority, St Julian's still offers a dynamic atmosphere and a wide range of dining options.
Mellieha For Beaches and a Slower Pace ☀️
Mellieha feels noticeably more relaxed than the busier urban areas. Located in the north of Malta, it is close to some of the island’s best beaches and offers a more spacious and laid back atmosphere.
This was one of our favorite areas for a calmer stay. The views are beautiful, the surroundings feel less hectic and it is a great choice if your ideal trip includes beach days and quieter evenings.
Mellieha is also conveniently located if you plan to visit the nearby island of Comino and the famous Blue Lagoon.
So Where Would We Stay? 🌍
If it were our first time in Malta, we would likely choose Sliema for its balance of convenience, central location and relaxed atmosphere.
For travelers who value character and history, Valletta offers a more memorable and distinctive experience.
If nightlife and social energy are important, St Julian's is the best fit.
And for a more peaceful trip focused on beaches and scenic surroundings, Mellieha stands out.
