Gran Canaria is often called a continent in miniature, and its beaches are just as varied as its landscapes. From the famous golden dunes of Maspalomas to sheltered coves and lively city beaches, the island offers an incredible range of places to swim and relax.
During our time on the island, beach days were one of the easiest pleasures, thanks to the warm climate and beautiful coastline. Some spots were busy and well equipped, while others felt quiet and more natural.
In this guide, we are sharing the beaches and coastal spots that impressed us the most and are absolutely worth visiting while exploring Gran Canaria.
Playa de Maspalomas 🏜️
Playa de Maspalomas, in the south, is the island's most famous beach, backed by a vast expanse of golden dunes.
The combination of the long sandy beach and the desert like dunes behind it makes it a truly unique place. Walking through the dunes down to the sea is an experience in itself, especially in the softer light of morning or evening.
It is one of the most iconic sights on the island.
Playa de Amadores ☀️
Playa de Amadores is a beautiful, sheltered beach with soft sand and calm, clear water.
Its protected bay makes it especially good for relaxed swimming, and the surrounding promenade has plenty of places to eat and drink. It has a comfortable, resort like atmosphere.
It is a great choice for an easy, family friendly beach day.
Puerto de Mogan 🌿
The area around Puerto de Mogan, often called Little Venice for its canals, is one of the most charming spots on the island.
The beach here is calm and pleasant, and the picturesque village with its flower lined streets makes it a lovely place to spend the day. It is a beautiful combination of beach and character.
It is worth exploring the harbor and village as well.
Playa de las Canteras 🌊
In the city of Las Palmas, Playa de las Canteras is one of the best urban beaches in Spain.
This long stretch of golden sand, protected by a natural reef, offers calm water and a lively promenade full of restaurants and cafes. It is a wonderful place to combine city life with a relaxed beach day.
It is perfect if you are staying in or near the capital.
Playa de Güigüi ⛰️
For something wilder, the remote beach of Güigüi in the west is reached only by a hike or by boat.
Its dramatic setting, dark sand and unspoiled surroundings make it feel like a hidden paradise. Reaching it takes effort, but the sense of escape is well worth it.
